Tourism Australia is hoping to boost the number of people
looking to apply for Australian visas to allow them to visit Australia next
year, through its special events being planned for the Expo 2010 in
Shanghai.
Chinese people are moving to Australia in huge numbers at the
moment, and Tourism Australia sees this as a chance to also promote the country
as a holiday destination for the Chinese.
The plan is to stage a game of
Australian rules football at the event in the Australian Pavilion. The event
will take place on 17 October and will involve a game between two Australian
football League clubs: Melbourne and Brisbane.
One of the themes in the
Australian Pavilion is ‘The Great Outdoors’ which the organisers hope will be
reflected in the football game.
Kevin Rudd, the Australian Prime
Minister, says that the game, "reflects Australia\'s national values of courage,
enterprise, resilience and ‘mateship'.”
The Australian Pavilion website
says the programme of events taking place there will be relevant to the Expo’s
‘Better City, Better Life’ theme. It states that it will do this by, "focusing
on Australia's cities - many consistently ranked as among the world's most
liveable - and our smart solutions for urban living.”
