Czech to present Kafka at Shanghai Expo

2010. 13 January

(news.xinhuanet.com) A part of Czech's pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010 will be dedicated to the famous writer Franz Kafka, a cultural symbol of Prague, director of Franz Kafka Centre Marketa Malisova told Xinhua.

As a sub-institution of the Franz Kafka Society, an international society with about 1,000 members worldwide, the Franz Kafka Centre has prepared to present Kafka for Shanghai Expo, Malisova said.

Born in 1883, Kafka was a son of a Jewish businessman who lived in the center of Prague's Old Town.

Malisova explained that though Kafka did not write in Czech but in German, but "great changes happened in Prague at the beginning of the last century" inspired him.

"Prague was a city where Kafka could meet with great writers like Hasek and Capek, where he lived along with German writers like Rilke, where he met important thinker like Albert Einstein," said Malisova.

Nowadays, Kafka's graveyard and two Kafka museums have become Prague's popular tourist attractions.
