Shanghai may sell foreign news at Expo

2010. 20 January

by Wang Zhenghua and Hou Lei
(chinadaily.com.cn) Shanghai is to consider selling foreign newspapers during the 2010 World Expo based on the relevant laws and regulations of China, an official said Wednesday afternoon.

Zhu Yonglei, Deputy Director General of Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, said the authorities will consider the demand of exhibitors and visitors to decide whether to allow the sales of newspapers from outside the Chinese mainland at the Expo site and even in the whole of Shanghai temporarily.

Zhu said the authorities will provide a solution to satisfy such needs from the exhibitors and visitors based on China's laws and regulations.

During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, about one hundred overseas newspapers and magazines were allowed to be sold at news kiosks located in areas catering to athletes and international media covering the event, an action praised by foreigners as the country's open manner towards media freedom.
