China Unicom has invested 700 million yuan (US$103 million) on telecommunications infrastructure construction for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai and launched a bilingual daily newspaper with video for handset users, the country's No. 2 mobile carrier said today.
It was the first mobile newspaper with video content nationwide, thanks to China Unicom's cooperation with Ku6.com and traditional media including the Shanghai Evening Post.
"Visitors can discover the latest information and watch video clips through the newspaper," Lu Dongliang, vice general manager of China Unicom's Shanghai branch, said today.
For overseas visitors, Shanghai Unicom has signed agreements with Shanghai Daily to jointly develop 3G applications and an English-language mobile Website for the six-month Expo.
More than 80 percent of overseas Expo visitors, which are expected to hit 3.5 million, will use phones under Shanghai Unicom's WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) network.
