Nature-inspired Latvian Pavilion

2010. 8 February

Eco Factor: Sustainable pavilion for the Shanghai World Expo 2010.

By Sebastian J.

(archdaily.com) Latvian architects Mailītis A.I.I.M. have commenced construction on the Latvia Pavilion to grace the Shanghai World Expo 2010. The Latvian Pavilion has been inspired by nature and its façade will symbolize nature and its various facets including the forests, the sea, the land, the sky and the wind.

The pavilion will be used to showcase the cultural achievements of Latvia and its technological advancements and measures to protect the environment. The façade of the pavilion will be composed of 100,000 colorful, transparent plastic sheets which will sway in the wind to create a dynamic effect.

The centerpiece of the pavilion will be a wind tunnel that will make selected visitors fly. The 1000 square meter pavilion will feature an AERODIUM wind tunnel, where the guests will get a chance to win a free flight in the vertical wind tunnel. Apart from the wind tunnel, films and other audiovisual materials on Latvia and related themes will be shown on exposition screens within the pavilion.

Three wind turbines will also be placed on the roof of the pavilion, which will be used to project a professional team of acrobats 20m into the night sky above the Expo grounds.
