The allure of the tropics is being used as a lure to draw Chinese tourists to Fiji during the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
Fiji is the essence of a tropical island paradise with white sandy beaches, swaying coconut trees, pristine ocean and waterways, said Tourism Fiji Chief Executive Officer Josefa Tuamoto. The island offiers a range of things to do and see that will appeal to the most discerning traveler
Participation in the expo "will enable us to showcase Fiji as a potential destination for Chinese visitors," Tuamoto said.
Fiji will be displaying food items, liquor, spices, canned foods, shoes, handicraft and kava.
"As the industry now focuses its efforts on China, which has shown an upward trend year by year, the Chinese market has become a new growth point for the tourism industry in the country."
According to Tuamoto, the beginning of air routes of Air Pacific/Cathay Pacific-Hong Kong-Nadi has provided the opportunity for tourism stakeholders to look at new markets such as China.
Fiji is among the many countries that will be on show at the World Expo.
Annie Rogers, Fiji's commissioner general to the Expo and chief executive for the Trade and Investment Bureau, said Fiji's theme will be "Building Bridges Through The Journey."
"We are able to maintain our uniqueness as a multiracial, multicultural society by 'building bridges' or uniting with other races from all walks of life, as we evolve with time," Rogers said.
