Premier launches WA’s role in world’s biggest expo

Western Australia Premier Colin Barnett will today launch the Western Australian component of the Shanghai World Expo 2010 - the biggest world Expo in history.
The Expo will run from May through to October with more than 200 countries and corporations on display
Australia will have a national presence at the Expo with a pavilion to showcase our country’s innovation, creativity and achievement.
The Premier said the six-month Expo, with the theme ‘Better City, Better Life’ provided an ideal platform for Western Australia to present Perth and WA as a whole as a great place to live, work and play.
“China is WA’s number one trading partner and, as such, it is important to develop awareness and understanding of each other’s values, culture and traditions. Shanghai 2010 gives us that opportunity,” he said.
“Western Australia’s participation in the Expo includes a business missions program to demonstrate the State’s strengths in building and construction services; education services; tourism; design; and agribusiness.
“The Expo presents an opportunity to showcase Western Australian industry and lifestyle to the world, while further strengthening economic and strategic relationships with China.
“The Government of Western Australian supports and welcomes the opportunity offered by the World Expo to further strengthen the State’s relationship with China.”
Three Western Australian business missions will visit Shanghai and Hangzhou, the capital of Western Australia’s sister province Zhejiang as well as other cities of economic and strategic importance to the State.
The Premier visited Shanghai during his official visit in July 2009 and paid a quick visit to the site of the Expo, which had already started to take shape.
Western Australia will also send students, performers and locally produced artwork to the Expo and 50 coolamons (traditional Aboriginal carry boxes), containing regional produce, will be gifted to Chinese officials.
The Western Australian launch will be held today at Council House and feature Chinese dancing lions, an Aboriginal dance group and a WA-Zhejiang College art exhibition.
