German architects are building a unique building with bamboo at the World Expo site, officials said yesterday.
The two-story building, covering 330 square meters, is believed to be the smallest exhibition hall at the Expo, according to Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Shanghai.
"It's easy to be built and dismantled," said the designer Markus Heinsdorff. "All the materials can be reused."
The energy-efficient building uses Yulong bamboo grown in Yunnan Province.
Ninety-six 8-meter-long bamboo poles will constitute the building structure, with a huge bamboo covering as the roof.
Furniture inside will also be of bamboo, the designer said.
