Volunteers get ready to serve

2010. 8 March

by Yang Jian
(shanghaidaily.com) THE China Pavilion at the 2010 World Expo will have 58 volunteers to help visitors during the 184-day event, the Expo organizer said yesterday.
Reservations are essential at the building, which can only accommodate 50,000 people each day. Some 400,000 visitors are expected to visit the Expo site daily.

Groups can book by telephone while individuals must use the around 200 reservation machines across the site. Eight volunteers will be at the pavilion's entrances to help them.

Another 10 volunteers will act as guides and there will be 10 receptionists. Twenty-five volunteers will patrol the three-story building while another five will help those with physical difficulties.

All the volunteers at the pavilion will be able to speak English and have received first-aid training, said Xia Kejia, director of the Volunteer Department of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.

The first batch of 220 Expo volunteers started work yesterday. They will lead the other 77,000 volunteers at the event.

They are now familiarizing themselves with the Expo site and detailed plans for volunteer services are being drawn up.

The Expo site will have 2,535 volunteers serving visitors on normal days. The number will be doubled during peak periods, including weekends and holidays, Xia said.

Most of the volunteers are undergraduates of local universities. More than 400 foreigners, mainly from Japan, Spain, South Korea and Italy, have also been recruited.
