Czech National Day at Expo to present over 200 artists

Prague - Over 200 musicians, dancers and other artists will participate in the programme of the Czech National Day at the Expo 2010 world exhibition in Shanghai, China on May 17 shortly after the event´s opening, its organisers told reporters today.

(ceskenoviny.cz) The programme, prepared by Michal and Simon Caban, will offer, for instance, the National Theatre´s ballet, Cechomor band, jazz musicians Emil Viklicky and Dan Barta, the National Puppet Theatre as well as alternative and street theatre ensembles.

The creative show will be "moderated" by legendary Czech puppets of Spejbl and Hurvinek (father and son), Michal Caban said.

The Czech Republic has also prepared a rich accompanying programme, including an exhibition on the Chinese legend on Monkey King with artist Zdenek Sklenar´s illustrations, animations and interactive elements, and the Metropolis exhibition of street art and graffiti within the weeks of Czech art and culture, the EXPO preparatory office announced.

Within the weeks of Czech design, visitors will have a chance to see the works by ten selected Czech designers.

From the field of literature, the Czech team will stage an exhibition of Prague-born German Jewish writer Franz Kafka (1883-1924) and present the Chinese translation of the first book by renowned Czech Jewish author Arnost Lustig, 83, White Birches.

Czech regions will also be presented at Expo, said Martina Honcikova, from the Expo general commissioner´s office organising the Czech participation.

Everything should be ready for a trial operation to be launched on April 20, Honcikova added.

The Czech display at Expo is to have the form of a symbolical town. Most exhibits are designed to present the contemporary Czech Republic. The Czech pavilion is covered with hockey pucks on the outside.

The government has earmarked about half a billion crowns for the exhibition at Expo 2010 in Shanghai to be held on May 1-October 31, 2010. It is to to be the largest in history.
