African countries' participation inseparable to Expo

2010. 25 March

Xinhua
(china.globaltimes.cn) Africa is a unique continent which is rich in civilization, culture and colorful social life and its participation in the Shanghai World Expo is inseparable to the success of such a big event, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Deng Hongbo said on Wednesday.

In an interview with Xinhua, Deng Hongbo said that the Shanghai World Expo is a golden opportunity not only for China to display itself as a country with long history in civilization but also serves as an important platform for China to strengthen exchanges and promote understanding with the rest of the world.

"This is a very good and important stage for the countries to learn from each other. The participation of the African countries in the World Expo will provide the Chinese people with a very good chance to better understand Africa and the African people's achievements in their economic, social, cultural and technological development."

The ambassador stressed that Africa has played a very positive and active role in participating in the Shanghai World Expo by registering a record high number of 50 African nations which are ready to attend the event. "So far the preparation for Africa's participation in the World Expo is under way and going smoothly."

With regard to China's assistance to African nations' participation, Deng said the Chinese government has attached special attention to the facilitation of African countries' participation through various formalities including visa, information provision, logistics and financial support.

Meanwhile, Deng also termed the Shanghai World Expo as a good opportunity for China and Africa to further promote bilateral relations and mutual beneficial cooperation, which, according to him, is not just in the economic and technological fields but also in the cultural, social and people to people exchange sectors.

The ambassador said he strongly believes that after the Shanghai World Expo there will be better understanding between China and Africa and the exchanges and cooperation between the two sides will be further expanded and intensified.

"Further substantial, mutual and beneficial cooperation between China and Africa in the years ahead will benefit the interests of our two peoples."

The Shanghai World Expo is an international exposition that will take place from May 1 to October 31 this year and cover a surface of more than 5 square km in Shanghai, under its main theme of "Better City, Better Life".

It is expected to attract 70 million people from the public and private sectors, civil society, international organizations and others. As far as now, 242 participants have confirmed their presence.
