Shanghai tightens security on Metro

City Metro police officers will swoop on delivery company staff who try to bypass security checks by passing goods over turnstiles.
The initiative is partly driven by the impending Shanghai World Expo but is also an overall security clamp to head off any dangerous or flammable goods from entering the city's passenger trains.
City delivery companies would be asked to sign agreements with both police and the subway operator to have all goods checked by X-ray machines, a police spokesman said yesterday.
Many staff carry packages onto the Metro system, with co-workers waiting at stations to take delivery.
A regulation concerning Metro operations came into force on March 1, ruling that security staff can stop passengers from entering stations if they do not cooperate on security matters.
However, the regulation does not cover the delivery loophole.
Glass barriers at subway stations will also be raised to discourage the practice.
Security checks have been criticized by some members of the public who said some stations were lax and some staff "behaved irresponsibly."
Police said they welcomed public supervision and would continue soliciting online opinions.
Officers said they had confiscated 3,479 items of contraband from Metro stations since March 15.
