Dongtan Wetland Park due to open

2010. 6 April

by Jane Chen
(shanghaidaily.com) Dongtan Wetland Park on Shanghai's Chongming Island will open at the end of this month after a decade's construction.

It is the only wetland park in China connected to a natural reserve for migratory birds, today's Shanghai Evening News reported.

Each autumn and winter, up to 149 species of migratory birds flock to Dongtan, the newspaper quoted the park operator as saying.

To protect the local ecology, no more than 2,000 visitors will be allowed in the park from May to October each year, according to the operator.

Admission will be 200 yuan (US$29.30) when it opens officially on April 28. Discounts of up to 60 percent may be offered during the World Expo in Shanghai from May through October this year.

The park plans to cut fees to 20 or 30 yuan for children from Monday to Thursday to make it an ecological classroom for local children.

Each visitor will get a watch-shaped ticket when entering the park. With the visitor's mobile phone number set in the watch, each will be connected to a global positioning system to avoid losing anyone, according to the park's general manager Qiu Zhonghong.

Guides in Chinese, English and Japanese will be automatically available on the watch. Visitors can also use the watch to shop in the park and settle the bills when leaving.
