Hatoyama set to visit China for 'Japan Day' at Expo

2010. 6 April

(mdn.mainichi.jp) Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has begun adjusting his schedule with the aim of visiting China on June 12, "Japan Day" of the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.

During the trip, Hatoyama also plans to go to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao and sign an initiative granting inspectors of both nations permission to enter the other country's food production facilities.

China had originally requested a visit from the prime minister on May 1, the day of the Shanghai Expo opening ceremony. However, because Hatoyama visited China in October last year to meet with Chinese and South Korean heads of state and Hatoyama has been waiting for a return visit from China before visiting again, the May 1 date is unsuitable.

However, since Wen appears likely to visit Japan soon, and President Hu is expected to come to Japan for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November, it was decided to honor China's desire for a visit from Hatoyama during the World Expo, even though it makes two visits in a row from the Japanese side.

After the arrest of the suspected culprit in the poisoned dumplings case, China is seen hoping to convince Japan and the world of its food safety. Hatoyama has also expressed his desire for real results in improving Japan-China relations, but with the dispute over gas exploration of the East China Sea and the most recent issue of executions of Japanese nationals in China, obstacles in relations between Japan and China remain as ever.
