First Shanghai Mayor Visits Taiwan Since 1949

Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng, leading a 200 member delegation, arrives in Taipei today, the first visit by a Shanghai mayor since 1949, when the Kuomintang (KMT) moved to Taiwan after losing a civil war to the Communist Party.
Han and his group, invited by Taipei Mayor L.B. Hau, are scheduled to stay four days in Taipei, during which the two mayors will hold a city-to-city forum and sign a memorandum of understand (MOU) for mutual cooperation in culture, tourism, high-tech industrial parks and environmental protection.
The Shanghai mayor will promote the upcoming World Expo 2010 Shanghai, to open on May 1, in Taiwan, as well as host a China-bound investment seminar for interested local businesses.
The 200 Chinese delegates include 60-70 representatives from over 40 leading enterprises in Shanghai, engaged in automotive, food, real estate, agricultural produce, retail, supermarket, biotechnology, high technology sectors.
