Water watchdogs to ensure that flow won't slow

(shanghaidaily.com) Monitors will watch Shanghai's water pipes and valves around the clock to ensure the city's water supply during the World Expo period, the water authority said yesterday.
The Shanghai Water Authority said a special patrol team consisting of employees of Shanghai Water Works will be in charge of the security of the city's water supply facilities.
The authority launched a security plan to ensure a reliable water supply to 464 "key units" in the urban area: hotels above the three-star level, boarding high schools, first-class hospitals, subway hubs, major roads and other important places.
Shen Weizhong, deputy director of the authority's water supply division, said the head of each key unit should be aware of the unit's water supply situation, and more: "Not only the neighboring water network but also every water facility, pipe and even the blueprint of the valves."
The authority set up a repair team for emergencies. The team, including a command vehicle, three water quality inspectors and four water tankers, will rush to accident areas immediately, fixing problems such as burst pipes, water leaks, supply shortages and water quality checks.
Shen also promised steady water to the Expo Site despite visitor volume estimated as huge as 70 million.
"We've prepared 120 percent of the water," Shen said.
Shen said the severe drought in southwest China won't affect the city because the Yangtze River and the Taihu Lake area, Shanghai's two water sources, "are plentiful."
