On Line 2, either end is soon an airport

The city's two international airports will be connected by a two-hour subway ride starting Thursday, when Metro Line 2 extends farther east.
Shanghai Shentong Group, the subway's operator, said yesterday that initial service from Guanglan Road Station to the Pudong International Airport Station will last from 9am to 4pm. The service time will extend to rush hours before the World Expo starts in May.
Metro riders who intend to go to Pudong airport will have to get off first at Guanglan Road Station, the current eastern terminal, and wait at the same platform for a four-carriage train which will take them rest of the way. That part of the ride, with eight stops, will take about 45 minutes.
That's a lot slower than the Shanghai Maglev, which goes from Line 2's Longyang Road Station to the Pudong airport, 30 kilometers, in less than eight minutes.
But it's a lot cheaper. The basic charge for a maglev ride is 50 yuan (US$7.32). To ride the Metro all the way between the two airports is eight yuan.
The four-carriage trains that will go from Guanglan Road to Pudong airport on Line 2 can carry about 1,500 people. The rest of the line uses eight-car trains.
"We will add the carriages when the volume increases," said Liu Chunjie, general manager of the eastern extension project.
Less than a month ago, Line 2 extended westward all the way to Hongqiao International Airport. In July it will open another stop in that area, at the under-construction Hongqiao Transport Hub.
