A preview of one of the many performances at World Expo 2010 in Shanghai

Promising to be the high point of the tourist season, Expo 2010 opens in Shanghai China on May 1st. The theme of Expo 2010 is "Better City, Better Life," representing the optimism of our urban future.

The events and cultural performances of Expo 2010 can be epitomized with 20 keywords, which are: theme, debut, famous artists and bands, local features, fashion, award-winning programs, street performances, arts festivals, world intangible cultural heritages, cooperation, innovation, enlightenment, Expo Site opening/closing activities, urban links, creation, relay, interaction, rationality, art exhibition and high-tech.”

Highlights of Major Shows and Events
Apart from the opening and closing ceremonies enjoy more than 20,000 events and cultural performances, including martial arts, a tea show, acrobatics, dancing, magic, songs.

The China National Song & Dance Ensemble will stage more than 260 performances at the Expo focusing on two themes that showcase Chinese folk songs and dances, and international folk dances. There will be special shows and activities for children.

Indoor Venues
The Expo Performance Center is located within Block AB to the east of the Expo Axis. It is adjacent to the Huangpu River, giving it amazing scenery when you look out from it. On the first floor is the main performing area, which is a choice venue for original stage performances.

Across the Expo Axis is the Expo Center, with the waterfront green belt on its north side. It boasts two indoor venues for performances: the main hall that will be used for Pavilion Day activities, and performances including opera, ballet and orchestra.

The Baosteel stage will be mainly used to hold activities and performances by Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.

Entertainment Hall is located in the Puxi Expo Site. The stages of Entertainment Hall can change its shapes in line with the actual needs from different performances, and it’s designed for the staging of original shows, concerts and other types of performances.

Outdoor Venues
Enjoy Asian folk dancing and songs, outdoor concerts and outdoor live vocal concerts, Oceania for ethnic and folk dancing and singing performances from the Pacific Oceania countries. The Europe, America and Africa squares, all located in Block C, will be home to ethnic and folk shows from countries in these three continents accordingly.

Houtan Square will be the stage for three large-scale performances, which are the theme show “Windows of City”, high-tech interactive activities “We are One Family” and the innovative interactive project “Global Innovative Tours of Youth”.

Three parading teams will stage various shows in accordance with stipulated time and routes, and visitors can watch the professional parades with different styles and flavors from different countries on the designated routes.

Of course, on top of all that are the individual countries pavilions.

For example, the Oman Pavilion is reminiscent of the prow of a Ganjah, one of the largest and most beautiful of traditional Omani sailing ships. Combining Arabian features and modern styles, the pavilion will exhibit old Omani towns, cities in desert and mountain, and port cities. It will trace the country’s progress from past to present, capturing the nation’s beauty, traditions, culture.

Malaysia Pavilion was inspired by the traditional Malaysian hut. Visitors will encounter world heritages of Penang and Malacca and experience Malaysian artworks and their production process. Visitors will be able to pitch and putt at an indoor golf area. The sightseeing elevator between two stories will be designed to simulate the famous Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

Tour Africa within the Africa Pavilion through forty-three exhibitors presenting the most compelling natural landscape of the continent.

USA Pavilion
will feature a show entitled "The Garden" - the story of a 10-year-old girl who envisages turning a vacant city lot into an urban oasis, working with her neighbors to make that happen. The movie -- a visual parable without dialogue -- will include plenty of computer-generated imagery and 4-D effects, like vibrating seats, mist and lightning.

The pavilion will also feature live shows and multimedia in four performance spaces.
