Copyright cops pounce

2010. 9 April

by Xu Fang
(shanghaidaily.com) The city's intellectual property right protectors yesterday vowed thorough and severe crackdowns on CD and DVD pirates and infringements on Expo logos and mascots.

Officials said the campaign, joined by several law enforcement
departments, will last until the end of the World Expo Shanghai.

Chen Xuejun, deputy director of the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Bureau, said they have investigated 34 cases concerning violations of Expo intellectual property rights so far this year. Officials recently shut down a warehouse of pirated Haibao, mascot of the 2010 World Expo, in Huangpu District.

"In addition to inspecting the market often and driving out those roadside vendors of fake mascots, we have put more efforts to discover the warehouses and workshops," Chen said.

In the first two months this year, authorities checked 30,600 shops and detected 435 trademark-violation cases.

Publication supervisors last month seized more than 700,000 pirated DVDs and CDs and 32,000 pirated books and closed 229 stores.
