BEDB To Showcase Bruneian Products At World Expo

2010. 19 April

by Goh Do No
(brudirect.com) Bandar Seri Begawan - Besides promoting Brunei as an investment destination, the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDS) will be bringing two iCentre incubatees and two small-to-medium enterprises (SME) to the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai which begins next month.

Sheikh Rashid Salam, assistant chief executive officer and the head of marketing and investment promotion of the board, told The Brunei Times that they wanted to showcase Bruneian products during the investment week.

"One of the SMEs we have identified is from the cottage industry and we are also trying to promote the Buy Brunei Portal," he said.

As for highlighting Brunei as an investment destination, BEDS will be showcasing various clusters of opportunity that Brunei has to offer through videos and slideshows, Sheikh Rashid said.

He also reminded that majority of the expo crowd will be from the general public and visitors will be interested in cultural shows.

"It won't necessarily be all businessmen so we are not focussing on investment per se, but we are there to speak to potential investors as and when they come in," he said, adding that half the team can speak Chinese so that language wouldn't be a problem.

BEDB personnel will be at the booth during the first week of May and August but their booth will remain at the expo for entire six months.

'Although we will not be there during the entire period, investors who are interested will still be able to contact us and I believe, one of the SMEs or incubatees will be there for the entire six months at their own expense to promote their products," he said.

Brunei is participating under the theme "Now... for the Future", which reflects the Sultanate's current efforts in realising its vision of increasing the quality of life for its citizens, not only for the present but for the future generation in accordance with Brunei's Vision 2035 or long-term development goals, the expo's website stated.

The pavilion will be located in Zone B of the expo site, together with Mean and Oceania countries and will be highlighted on May 8.

Brunei's participation is coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in collaboration with other ministries, agencies and private organisations.

BEDB's exhibits will feature the extension of the oil and gas value chain in Brunei that include methanol, derivatives, petrochemicals, integrated petrochemical refinery, crude oil and chemical storage.

'Also part of our exhibit will be building on Brunei's biodiversity through alternative energy such as solar glass manufacturing, solar modules and eco-tourism facilities. We also hope to leverage on Brunei's Islamic brand," the BEDB said.

The board will also showcase Brunei's long-term capabilities such as port development and logistics services at Pulau Muara Besar, ICT, such as plans for data centres.

Brunei's pavilion will feature tropical rainforests and unique natural landscapes in Brunei. "A special revolving pattern can be seen around the pavilion, accompanied by an upward trend with vertical patterns to symbolise the gradual improvement of the Bruneian people's lives and their ambition for developing a better economy," the expo's website said.
