Sky News Australia Signs Agreement With China

2010. 19 April

Australia's news channel SKY NEWS on Monday announced it has sealed a landmark reciprocal programming agreement with China's national broadcaster CCTV, Xinhua news agency reports.

(bernama.com) In a breakthrough for Australia-China relations, SKY NEWS has secured agreement for its programme to be broadcast in China, while English-language programme from CCTV will be broadcast in
Australia on a regular basis for the first time.

There will be a daily exchange of business and trade news reports between the SKY NEWS Business Channel and CCTV covering the key events in both countries.

The relationship with CCTV will commence with the weekly broadcast of the English-language CCTV programme "Dialogue" on public affairs channel A-PAC.

This is the first time anywhere in the world that "Dialogue" has been broadcast outside of China other than on a CCTV station, Xinhua cited SKY NEWs as saying.

"Dialogue" is a current affairs and interview programme broadcast from Beijing in English-language exploring world issues from a Chinese perspective.

Under the agreement, CCTV will have regular access to programming and journalists from SKY NEWS main channel and the SKY NEWS Business Channel.

SKY NEWS also announced that Political Editor David Speers would travel to China next month to host special broadcasts of " China Agenda" from the Shanghai World Expo 2010.

Australian trade officials and business leaders are mounting a major presence at the World Expo to promote Australia's trade interests in China. SKY NEWS Business Channel's Peter Switzer will also broadcast from Shanghai.

"This is more than just a gesture between Australian and Chinese media that has occurred in the past. The results of the agreement that SKY NEWS and CCTV have signed will materialize immediately into regular television broadcasts from next week," said Mr Angelos Frangopoulos, the CEO of Australian News Channel that provides the SKY NEWS channels.

SKY NEWS is Australia's leading 24-hour news provider, launching in 1996 and adding digital interactive services and the Parliamentary Channel in 2004, the SKY NEWS Business Channel in 2008 and the A-PAC public affairs channel and SKY NEWS Local Active channels in 2009.
