Taguig heads for World Expo in China

2010. 21 April

by Ellson A. Quismorio
(mb.com.ph) The once sleepy town of Taguig is now being recognized as one of the four emergent Philippine cities to represent the 2010 World Expo in China.

Taguig Mayor Freddie Tiñga, upon the invitation of Vice President Noli de Castro, will be one of the speakers for a series of Philippine-sponsored fora themed “City Building for and with People toward a Sustainable Future.”

The event, which coincides with celebrations of Taguig’s 423rd Foundation Anniversary, will be held on Friday, April 23 in Shanghai, China.

Tiñga will discuss the city’s experiences and best practices on “Local Development, Housing and Social Welfare and Performance-oriented Governance,” as part of the overall National Urban Development Framework for the Philippines.

Taguig, along with Makati, Calbayog and San Fernando, La Union, was cited as an emergent city by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA, for the rapid and sustainable development it has achieved during the stewardship of Tiñga.

“We share this honor with our people. More than the physical development and growth of the city, our greatest achievement is that we have rekindled civic pride in the hearts of every Taguigeño,” said the three-term mayor.

From a town once unheard of, Taguig has grown into one of the most progressive urban centers of the country and gears toward becoming the Philippine’s premiere city in 2020.

The week-long celebrations for Taguig’s founding anniversary kicked off last Sunday with a float parade of the Mutya ng Taguig 2010 candidates and motorcade joined by thousands of local residents.
