Jin Yong Library to be recreated at 2010 Expo

2009. 8 June

(macaudailytimesnews.com) The coordinating office for the Shanghai Expo 2010 Macau pavilion (GPPMEMS) has secured free use of the works by internationally acclaimed literary scholar, Jin Yong.

The office has secured the rights to build the Jin Yong Library at the expo and to oversee all matters regarding the advertising, including those of exhibiting and divulging all his works and characters from his novels.

The office's coordinator, Christiana Ieong Pou Yee, visited the scholar in Hong Kong to hear his opinions on the Tak Seng On pawnshop replica's decoration.

This historical Macau building will be recreated at full scale at the expo's Urban Best Practices Area and the library will be built inside. As such, the scholar will provide the GPPMEMS with the required materials.

In order to harmonise with the Tak Seng On's promotion, GPPMEMS planned to organise, along with the Macau Fair and Trade Association (ACEM) and several other associations, a public voting for the 10 favourite heroic figures in Jin Yong works. The chosen characters will be featured in Tak Seng On's multimedia exhibition.

The contest's jury will be the author himself. GPPMEMS was also successful in getting the Shanghai 2010 Expo's organising body to grant it more space and a higher height restriction so that the building's full scale recreation can be “faithfully” executed and, according to a statement from the coordinating body, to show the world Macau's success in promoting the restoration and reuse of historical buildings.
