Sir Paul McCartney to help sell Liverpool at the Expo

2010. 22 April

by David Bartlett
(liverpoolecho.co.uk) Sir Paul McCartney will greet hundreds of thousands of visitors to Liverpool’s stand at the World Expo in Shanghai which starts in nine days.

The ex-Beatle will deliver a recorded video message to visitors as they queue to enter the hi-tech £1.1m pavilion. Click here to see a picture gallery of the pavilion.

They will then be ushered into a purpose-built cinema to watch a breath-taking 10-minute 3D film. Click here for a taster of the film.

Liverpool is the only UK city to have a dedicated presence at the Expo and is hoping to woo investors and tourists to the city.

Today it was claimed it could bring greater benefits than the city’s Capital of Culture year.

The finishing touches are currently being added to the city’s stand.

City leaders said the success of the six-month showcase was vital to the future of Liverpool.

Liverpool Council leader Warren Bradley said: “There can be absolutely no doubt the opportunity for Liverpool, as a forward thinking city, is immense.

“Liverpool's offer will be on a global stage and the city is clearly open for business for the new investors.”

Labour leader Joe Anderson said it was absolutely the right thing for Liverpool to be doing.

“This is not just an opportunity for the city to showcase itself to the Far East but also to the world.

“It’s right that we should be there encouraging investment from the world.

“In terms of potential for the prospects of economic growth and jobs it’s as big if not bigger than the opportunities we had from Capital of Culture.”

The World Expo, which is seen as the business Olympics, is the biggest showcase of the city since its successful year as Capital of Culture in 2008.

The city will spend six months at the event in the Urban Best Practice Pavilion alongside cities like Cairo and Venice.

Mike Taylor, director of investment for regeneration agency Liverpool Vision who is leading the effort, said the city hopes to make gains in four main areas.

It wants to increase the number of tourists, attracting more students, encouraging more imports and exports from the region, and more foreign direct investment.

“We will be putting on a phenomenal show of the range and diversity of the economic assets that make us an attractive region for investment.

“What has happened in Liverpool in the past 10 years is phenomenal, we now have a truly international city to shout about.

“We hope our extraordinary 10-minute 3D movie will create a buzz and bring people to our stand.”

He dismissed questions that the event could be seen as a junket.
