Budapest, Shanghai to broaden cooperation
2009. 9 June
(MTI) - The mayors of Budapest and Shanghai signed a letter of intent in Budapest on Monday on broadening cooperation between the two cities, the Budapest mayor's office told MTI.
Under the document, signed by Gabor Demszky and Han Zheng, the
two cities will boost bilateral cooperation in infrastructure
development, conservation of national heritage, and in promoting
business and cultural relations, a statement said.
The world expo to be hosted by Shanghai in 2010 will be an
important milestone in the relations the two cities have been
building since 1996, it added.
Regarding the two cities' role in the economy, the figures show
that the Hungarian capital produces 37 percent of the country's GDP
and Shanghai 20 percent of China's, with which both cities exceed
the EU average by 20 percent.
Budapest maintains cooperation with Beijing and the other
Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Hangzhou.
Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai received Han Zheng in the afternoon
and discussed with him Hungary's participation at the Shanghai expo
and cooperation in business and Rand D.
