(brudirect.com) Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei Darussalam will take centrestage at the Shanghai World Expo tomorrow (May 8) when His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, officiates the Brunei Pavilion.

During the opening ceremony, a group of 23 Bruneians will be displaying the traditional Brunei wedding on stage.

Hanafiah bin Hj Zaini, Acting Assistant Director of Culture and Heritage, said in an interview, "This is the first time that we will be performing in the World Expo and we will be showcasing the traditional Malay wedding that is compiled with all the Adat Istiadat:"

He further added, "Today, three of the performers have also dressed up to showcase the traditional wedding to the Chinese visitors at the Pavilion."

The three performers received overwhelming response from the Chinese visitors:

Based in a 1,000-square-metre area at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, the Brunei Darussalam Pavilion has been built under the theme "Now ... for the Future", which reflects Brunei's commitment - not only the immediate needs of the people but more importantly the long term aspiration of its youth and future generations in accordance with Brunei's Vision 2035.

The main concept of the Pavilion revolves around the traditional patterns that reflect the nation's way of living.

The interior of the Brunei Pavilion displays huge pictures of Brunei's culture and the various popular tourism sites.

The 'ayer muleh' pattern symbolises the continuous harmony between nature, its rich heritage and tradition: The overall design concept shows Brunei's rich heritage and ambitions while maintaining its way of life.

The Brunei Pavilion houses exhibits from Royal Brunei Airlines, the history and landmark events of Oil and Gas, Brunei Economic Development Board projects, BruneiChina Friendship Association, Royal Brunei Catering as well as some local handicrafts.

Mr Lim Boon Hwa, the Treasurer of Brunei-China Friendship Association in an interview said, "The BruneiChina Friendship Association has a few yet significant exhibits at the Brunei Pavilion."

Mr Lim, who is visiting the exhibition to make sure everything is running smoothly, added, "We are here to support the Brunei Pavilion as the Brunei-China Friendship Association plays a vital role in forging ties between the two countries."
Hj Sabli bin Hj Omar, a local handicraft entrepreneur, showcased his handicraft skill on local traditional products. Hundreds of visitors have asked to buy his handicrafts, but they are not for sale:

He said, "I feel privileged to be able to showcase my handicraft skills to promote the local handicrafts to the visitors."

Video clips are also being shown on Brunei's tourism. Meanwhile, the eye-catching exterior of the Pavilion is designed based on the preservation of the pristine nature and rainforest. Rainforests are shown as the main feature at the main entrance.

The circular features represent the eight strategic plans for the development of Brunei Darussalam, while the rotating structure at the side of the building symbolises the revolving way of life within the traditions and also preserving the natural invironment.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
