Azure weathering steel panels clad the exterior of Australian Pavilion

FACADE Solutions used BlueScope Steel Azure weathering steel panels to clad the exterior of the Australian Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
According to Facade Solutions, the Azure weathering steel panels have been designed to develop an oxidised layer which protects the steel beneath from further corrosion.
Additionally, the BlueScope Steel Azure steel panels have a cassette-style system for precision positioning of down to 0.3mm between the panels. The Australian Pavilion, designed with radical curvature to recall the iconic Uluru, was clad with the help of this precision.
Facade Solutions provided a full design, manufacture and installation package for the Australian Pavilion, working together with Wood Marsh Architecture and builder Bovis Lend Lease.
Weather steel is rarely used in projects of this scale due to the technical complexities. However, the companies utilised BlueScope Steel’s expertise and the cassette system to enable perfect alignment between the panels.
