Space Pavilion: Crazy mascots and fake legos

2010. 3 June

by Elaine Chow
(shanghaiist.com) How disappointing! To be honest, one of the pavilions I was looking forward to before the Expo opened was the Space Pavilion. Sure, the description on the Expo website was a little vague - I had no idea what "The Origin of Dreams" was supposed to convey - but there was going to be a "Spacewalk" they promised.

I figured, with the many strides the space industry has made in China over the past few years, they'd have something pretty awesome to show.
Unfortunately, the two pieces of news I've seen about the pavilion have managed to dash my hopes.

First off, I don't know what to feel about their mascot Fei Fei (飞飞 or Fly Fly... get it?).

The general design creeps me out, but the red red lipstick makes me think that maybe it's paying a homage to China's first female astronauts. So huh. And yay?

And secondly, Shanghai resident Michele Travierso's review of the pavilion was somewhat damning. "The pointlessness of the Space Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo is hard to describe," he says, going on to say that the most amusing part was its merchandise shop.

There, he found these:

Hmmm... looks familiar, right?
