2010. 16 June

(liverpoolecho.co.uk) p>THE DESIGN for a sculpture commemorating John Lennon’s commitment to peace has been unveiled in Shanghai.

The full-size version, standing 18ft high and weighing 4.5 tonnes, will be installed permanently in Liverpool and is expected to become a major attraction for tourists on the Beatles trail.

The monument, called Peace and Harmony, is by US artist Lauren Voiers, a 19-year-old from Ohio who said her favourite Beatles song is I Am the Wulrus.

Speaking from China, she told the ECHO: “I think this sums up a lot about John Lennon and what he stood for. On a personal note, my passion is art but I also love music and I wanted to reflect this in the monument. Both art and music are universal languages.”

Incorporated into the design are doves, musical notes, a guitar and a keyboard.

At the request of Lennon’s son, Julian, there is also a white feather. The 47-year-old said this was a reference to a specific conversation he had with his father.

He said: “One of the things my father said to me was that should he pass away, if there was some way of letting me know he was going to be OK, it was by, in some shape or form, presenting me with a white feather.”

Julian is expected to unveil the monument this October as part of a two-month long festival to celebrate Lennon’s 70th birthday.

Yesterday, at the World Expo in Shanghai, visitors got a first glimpse of the artwork that is sure to become a Merseyside landmark.

Peace and John Lennon had a high profile association, particularly after the Beatles split up.

One of the most famous images of Lennon and his second wife, Yoko Ono, was when they held a Bed-In for Peace in Amsterdam for a week, and then later in Montreal.

Lennon’s lyrics also showed a desire for peace, with tracks like Give Peace a Chance and Imagine remaining firm favourites of fans throughout the world.
