Yuan Coins Signal Upcoming Expo
2009. 16 June
by Kerry Rodgers
(numismaster.com)
In 2010 Shanghai will host the World Expo with the theme "Better City - Better Life." To mark the event, the People's Bank of China has begun issuing a series of gold and silver commemoratives. Series I was released June 10.
The obverse of all three legal tender coins shows the World Expo logo in color against a background of the globe - centered, naturally, on China.
The reverse of the one-third ounce, .999 fine, 23 mm 150-yuan gold coin is dominated by Haibo, the mascot of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, standing proud above waves that front the Shanghai cityscape. Mintage is 50,000.
One of the 1-ounce, .999 fine silver, 40 mm 10 yuan carries a symbolic representation of a dandelion, its seeds being blown across the globe by the trade winds. The second shows an equally symbolic pattern of interlinked dynamic urban cells that are our world of the 21st century. Each silver coin has a mintage of 70,000.
The series has been jointly minted by Shenzhen Guobao Mint, Shanghai Mint and Shenyang Mint. It is distributed by China Gold Coin Inc. Try www.chinagoldcoin.net/ENGLISH/index.htm.
