Jawi Calligraphers Amaze Crowd In Shanghai Expo

2010. 26 July

by Achong Tanjong

(brudirect.com) Two calligraphy artists from Language and Literature Bureau, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports recently showcased the Brunei Jawi calligraphy writing skills as part of the sideline activity at Brunei Darussalam Pavilion in Shanghai Expo 2010.

A representative from Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in Shanghai said the show was held in two sessions.

Visitors who attended the show had their name written in Arabic words on pieces of paper as part of their gift from Brunei Darussalam Pavilion.

The show attracted a large number of crowds not only from the local community but also foreign visitors.

The officer hoped it could promote Brunei's calligraphy to the international arena and also gives the opportunity for visitors to have a closer look on Jawi writing used in Brunei Darussalam.

The show also paved the way for local artists to exchange ideas and mingle with several other members of Shanghai Calligraphy Association, which was invited to the Pavilion.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports had received solid support and cooperation from the organisers of Brunei Pavilion in Shanghai in implementing various activities as well as enliven the Cultural Heritage during the month of July 2010 at Brunei Darussalam Pavilion in Shanghai. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
