A model of the 'Phoenix' rescue capsule that brought 33 miners to safety after almost 10 weeks in a Chilean mine is being sent to the Shanghai Expo.
Speaking on the public television station TVN, Chile Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter said on Sunday the replica 'will reflect the extraordinary saga' of the miners, who were brought to the surface as the world watched on October 13.
Hinzpeter said the capsule, which is four metres long and weighs 450 kilograms, will leave Chile later on Sunday and should arrive in Shanghai by Tuesday.
It will be displayed at the Chilean stand at the Expo, which runs until October 31.
The capsule is one of three built for the rescue mission. They were named Phoenix 1, 2, and 3 to symbolise the rebirth of the miners as they emerged from a narrow shaft after spending a record 69 days underground.
The model used in the actual rescue was the Phoenix 2, and the capsule going to Shanghai will be one of the other two.
The Phoenix 2 is to go on display in the public square in front of the presidential palace in the Chilean capital Santiago, Hinzpeter said.
A replica of the rescue capsule could also feature in a museum that is being planned to pay tribute to the miners and the inspiring rescue effort that saved them.
