Bligh Government's commitment to China on show in Cairns

2009. 19 June

(australia.to) The Bligh Government's commitment to trade with China will be on show this weekend as Queensland hosts world renowned Chinese chef Mr Fuhua Chen to highlight Shanghai Week 2009.

Trade Minister Stephen Robertson said Trade Queensland and local industry partners are helping to turn the Chinese media spotlight on Tropical North Queensland in the lead up to Shanghai Week 2009.

Award-winning Shanghai chef, Mr Fuhua Chen, and representatives from two major Chinese media outlets are visiting Cairns from 21 to 24 June.

"We are honoured Mr Chen has taken the time to visit Cairns, his presence will help to strengthen trade relationships and expose Queensland's world-class tourism, hospitality and food products in Shanghai and across China," Mr Robertson said.

"Chef Chen will be a guest of The Sebel Cairns and will work alongside the hotel's own skilled chefs to prepare dishes using Queensland ingredients for a VIP luncheon on 23 June.

"Journalists from the International Channel Shanghai (ICS), and from Shanghai's major newspaper, Jiefang Daily will cover the visit. The ICS network reaches more than 4 million families in the Shanghai region while the Jiefang Daily has a circulation of 500,000.

"These journalists will also be guests of Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) to experience some of the many tourist operations and attractions in the region, including Green Island, Kuranda's Rainforestation Nature Park, the new Cairns Lagoon Esplanade development and a hot air balloon ride on the Atherton Tablelands," Mr Robertson said.

"The media coverage created in China will raise the profile of Cairns and Tropical North Queensland as tourist destinations, along with Queensland's top quality food products.

"The visit is a further opportunity to develop the tourism relationship between Shanghai and Queensland, supported by the Government's new Tourism Queensland office in Shanghai.

"Improving these relationships delivers on the government's Toward Q2 strategy to create a stronger Queensland by capitalising on our economic strengths while also broadening our economy.

"The Sebel Cairns and Tourism Tropical North Queensland are playing key roles in organising and hosting Chef Chen and the Shanghai media representatives, ensuring their visit is a success.

"The Bligh Government is supporting the visit through our export agency, Trade Queensland," Mr Robertson said.

Official Shanghai's Week celebrations run from 24 to 30 June and will include a visit to Brisbane by Shanghai senior government officials, and events including Chinese art and music demonstrations, and promotions for the Shanghai World Expo in 2010.
