Lord Mayor embarks on voyage to Shanghai ahead of 2010 Expo

2009. 22 April

( THE Lord Mayor of Liverpool is travelling to China today to boost links ahead of next year's Shanghai Expo.

Cllr Steve Rotheram will travel to the city to meet its mayor, Han Zheng, and will visit its university, sports bureau and World Financial Centre.

And Cllr Rotheram will also get the first glimpse of the huge Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, the venue for the 2010 Expo.

The Expo - dubbed the World Business Olympics - is a sixth-month long programme of events which will be the first ever to be held in a developing country.

Cllr Rotheram said: "Our link with Shanghai is very important."

"We are the only UK city outside London invited to take part in the Shanghai Expo next year."

"This event provides a tremendous opportunity for us to showcase Liverpool to a massive audience."

The two ports developed major trade links during the 19th century and the two cities were twinned in 1999.

Cllr Rotheram added: "We want to mark and strengthen our links with Shanghai and we are hoping that there will be a reciprocal visit by civic leaders from Shanghai to Liverpool later this year."

"This visit is an opportunity to promote Liverpool as an economic destination of choice for a vital market and we will be using every opportunity to bang the drum for the city."

City chief executive Colin Hilton is accompanying Cllr Rotheram to China.

He added: "This visit provides us with an opportunity for Liverpool to demonstrate its desire to have stronger links with Shanghai which we will be able to do at face-to-face meetings with the city's leaders.

"It is also a chance for us to affirm our commitment to next year's Expo."

The delegation will return on Sunday.
