Finland Pavilion to build sauna for visitors

2009. 30 July

(english.people.com.cn) The Finland Pavilion will be the only one at the Expo 2010 Shanghai to build a sauna, said Hu Yidu, general representative of the Finland Pavilion, on July 28 during an interview with media.

The sauna, together with a conference center and VIP lounge, will be built on the third floor of the three-storey "Kirnu" Finland Pavilion. The sauna will contain sauna rooms, shower areas and rest areas. It will have a total area of about 100 square meters and be able to accommodate 10 to 15 people.

When asked why a sauna will be built in the Finland Pavilion, Hu said that having a sauna is a Finnish custom, and joked that when Finns arrive somewhere, the first thing they do is build one.

The sauna originated in Finland. The country has a population of just 5.3 million people, yet has 500,000 saunas. Almost every Finnish family has a sauna in their own house, and Finns also usually build a sauna beside their holiday villas. The sauna has already become a symbol of Finland.

According to the original plan, the sauna at the Finland Pavilion will only be open for VIP visitors. However Hu said that they are studying how to allow other visitors experience an authentic Finnish sauna.
