School all smiles after top pool mark

2009. 19 August

(english.eastday.com) The swimming pool at Gezhi High School in Huangpu District is top of the class in terms of hygiene and cleanliness and has a smiling-face sign to prove it.

The pool yesterday became the first to be installed with a smiling face by the city health authority under a national campaign to rate the cleanliness of public venues and publicize the results.

There are about 450 public swimming pools in the city and all will undergo inspections and be installed with signs denoting levels of both sanitation and management. Pools in hotels and residential communities will be checked and graded as well.

The smiling-face sign is at the top level, followed by an indifferent face sign for a good performance and a crying face for a poor result.

"Though the face tags are easy to understand, we may upgrade the signs with a bilingual explanation as the 2010 World Expo approaches," said Gu Yaping of the Shanghai Health Supervision Agency.

"People can check the quality of a swimming pool by the signs and choose accordingly."

She said the agency was now targeting swimming pools, bathhouses and hotels and would rate all these venues by the end of the year

"As this is the first year of the program, we are just hanging signs of smiling and indifferent faces for the moment," she said.

"The crying-face signs will be installed after inspections next year if pools do not improve standards."

Inspections on all city public swimming pools will finish next week and then officials will start rating them.

There are about 30 items on a checklist. For example, a swimming pool can lose points for bad water quality or improper installation of mandatory facilities.

Inspections on hotels will be launched from August to October and bathhouses in December.

Sanitation levels will be re-evaluated regularly and the frequency will be based on this year's ratings.
