Harmonized Marriage - Not Tax - This Weekend at Toronto Chinatown Festival

For almost a century, Toronto Chinatown at
Spadina and Dundas has been the East-meets-West hub. People attending the 12
noon opening ceremony of the 9th Toronto Chinatown Festival this Saturday will
witness the harmonized "marriage" of diverse cultures. An ancient Chinese
royal wedding ceremony will unveil the annual Festival which expects over
100,000 people from across GTA and nearby regions. Haibao, the 2010 Shanghai
Expo mascot, will make its Toronto debut at the opening.
Spadina Avenue west side will be restricted for pedestrians between
Sullivan and St Andrew Street during festival hours Saturday from 12 noon to 8
p.m. and Sunday 12 noon to 6 p.m. More information about the Festival can be

Folk culture performances include a parade of colourful wedding costumes
from 6 ancient Chinese dynasties, and traditional costumes of Korean,
Japanese, and Indian weddings, a Chinese drum troupe show, authentic Shaolin
kung-fu shows, and Chinese folk dances.
There are close to 80 food and merchandise vendors, and elaborate Miao
costumes from a China ethnic group in Guizhou showcased in Dragon City Mall,
along with quiz and prizes sponsored by China National Tourist Office. Popular
Chinese ping-pong sport competition will be staged at the Chinatown Centre.
There is a contest draw for an 8-day China tour in Shanghai with meals and
5-star hotel accommodation.
The Festival is organized by CBIA, a partnership of 10 non-profit
associations to promote the business and community vitality of the Toronto
Chinatown.
