Peter Tesch appointed to fill vacant post of German ambassador

Peter Tesch, a Russian and German-speaking career diplomat, has been appointed to fill the vacant post of German ambassador.
Two other new ambassadors have been appointed to Lebanon and Portugal, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said.
The first choice for the German post, career diplomat Hugh Borrowman, was rejected by Kevin Rudd over concerns about Mr Borrowman's German language skills.
The rejection led the federal Opposition to claim that the Prime Minister was acting as a de facto foreign minister.
Mr Tesch is currently commissioner-general for Australia and Executive Director of Shanghai World Expo 2010.
In other changes, Jean Dunn will replace Lyndall Sachs as ambassador in Beirut. Ms Sachs is a career diplomat who has served previously in Seoul, Washington and Geneva.
Patrick Lawless is to be Australia's new ambassador to Portugal, succeeding Luke Williams, who has been at the post since 2006.
Portugese-speaking Mr Lawless is a career diplomat and a graduate of the University of NSW and the London School of Economics.
