Operators to Invest RMB 17 Bln in Shanghai

(marbridgeconsulting.com) The Shanghai Economic and Information Technology Committee has signed cooperation agreements with Shanghai Telecom, Shanghai Mobile and Shanghai Unicom which will see the operators invest a total of RMB 17 bln in Shanghai this year.

Zhang Weiying, general manager of Shanghai Telecom, stated that the company would invest RMB 6 bln in the city including: upgrading the city's international Internet bandwidth to 140G; allocating dedicated funds of RMB 4.8 mln to build free websites for 10,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs); establishing a RMB 6 mln fund to promote and spread informatization in rural areas; and spending RMB 800 mln on the construction of core communications infrastructure for the 2010 World Expo.

The cooperation with Shanghai Mobile mostly revolves around 3G construction and information services. The company will invest RMB 1 bln on communications infrastructure for the 2010 World Expo, including the construction of a TD-LTE demonstration network.

Zhao Le, deputy general manager of Shanghai Unicom, stated that the company would expand external Internet bandwidth from its metropolitan area network (MAN) by 4 times to 120G, introduce multiple new services, help enterprise reduce operating costs, and invest RMB 328 mln to meet the communication needs of the Word Expo.
