Uganda Ready for World Expo 2010
2009. 27 August
(allafrica.com)
After successfully hosting the Beijing 2008 Olympics, China did not go to sleep.
To the wise men in the East, it was simply the beginning of bigger things. It is for this reason that they will host a major World Expo from May 1 to October 31, 2010 in the commercial capital of China - Shanghai.
I have travelled to Shanghai twice for preparatory meetings and you can be sure that whatever is being brewed is of great aroma and flavour. The Shanghai Expo 2010 is under the theme "Better City, Better Life."
Under this theme, each country will depict the different strides it is taking in the urban development vis-à-vis environmental conservation.
In addition, Uganda will use this platform to showcase its export potential and attract investors especially during the national day celebrations on October 9, 2010.
Each country has been asked to choose a national day within the six month interval where all eyes will focus on a particular nation. Throughout the half year period, different exhibitors from Uganda stretching from the coffee to handicrafts and agro processed products will woo audiences and help market Uganda. This is great publicity for our motherland.
In line with the branding campaign of the Uganda Export Promotion Board (UEPB), Uganda should seize this opportunity and put its best foot forward.
Mrs. Florence Kata, the executive director of UEPB, is optimistic that Uganda will not leave Shanghai empty-handed. "This to us as a country, is a great opportunity to showcase our country's market exports. Our tourism sector has unique historical and cultural heritage. We look forward to branding our products," she said.
Kata is holding the portfolio as the commissioner general of Uganda for the Shanghai Expo 2010.
The exposition is to bring together 154 countries. Uganda is one of 43 countries exhibiting under the African Pavilion.
Universal expositions are known to average 200,000 visitors per day. In total, up to 70 million visitors are expected during the expo period.
The host country China has offered $650,000 as grant support to Uganda in addition to 250 square metres on which to construct a pavilion.
Of this, 65sq metres will be designated to a commercial bazaar.
The tourism, trade and industry ministry signed the participation agreement on behalf of Uganda.
UEPB signed the financial assistance and the service providers' agreements.
