More investment in LTE - Shanghai to have demo ready for 2010 World Expo

( gomonews.com) A consortium of mobile operators will be investing almost 2 billion euro in the telecoms system for Shanghai this year. The Shanghai Economic and Information Technology Committee has announced that it has signed agreements with Shanghai Telecom, Shanghai Mobile and Shanghai Unicom.

The money will be used to improve Internet bandwidth, create free websites and improve telecoms infrastructure in preparation for the 2010 World Expo. Shanghai Mobile will be mostly concentrating on the mobile infrastructure side of things, with investment going into a 3G network, and an operational LTE network that will be demonstrated at the expo.

What we think?

I’ll be looking forward to seeing the results from that network, if it’s ready in time. 2010 is pretty short notice to get an LTE network off the ground, but since it’s only city-wide it should be do-able. It’s not yet know whether the network would be kept in operation after the event, but it seems to be that it would be worthwhile holding on to one of the first true 4G networks in the world (sorry, Portland).
