Milestone Completed at UAE Pavilion

2009. 31 August

(wam.org.ae) Fireworks were set off in Shanghai this week to celebrate a key milestone in the construction of the UAE Pavilion on the World Expo site at Shanghai.

The final bolt was tightened on the steel framework of the twin dunes that form the grid shell structure of one of the largest country pavilions at Expo 2010 Shanghai.

The key phase of development was completed a few days ahead of schedule and the builders are now gearing up to commence application of insulation and roof cladding together with other fittings and fixtures so that the overall build will be complete in October 2009.

It is traditional for Chinese construction companies to set off fireworks at such important stages of a development and on this occasion the colourful ceremony was attended by members of the UAE Expo Team, along with Chinese Expo officials.

Commenting on the project's achievements, the Chairman of the National Media Council and UAE Minister of Labour, Saqr Ghobash, stated that the UAE Government has invested considerable finance, expertise and effort into creating what is widely acknowledged as one of the finest pavilions at World Expo 2010.

He praised the vision and support of the UAE President, H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, both of whom have expressed their personal interest in and commitment to this impressive and important project.

He also thanked the UAE Expo Team for their continued dedication to the project's success.

Commissioner General of the UAE Pavilion, Salem Al Ameri, stressed that he welcomed approaches from any interested bodies in the UAE since the core purpose of the UAE's participation is to strengthen cultural, political, social and economic ties between China and the UAE whilst also giving support to the World Expo movement which plays a valuable role in enhancing cross-cultural understanding and international friendship.

The UAE Pavilion at Expo 2010 is being organized by an Expo Committee set up by the UAE National Media Council on behalf of the UAE Government.

The pavilion has been designed by world renowned architectural practice, Foster + Partners and is an iconic structure inspired by the shape of sand dunes in the country's most famous desert, known as 'The Empty Quarter'.

UAE Pavilion will open its doors to the general public on 01 May 2010 and will be staffed by a team of specially trained Emirati and Chinese staff who will guide visitors through a series of audio visual 'experiences' culminating in a 'Dream Journey' that presents a stunning immersive imaginative journey over and through some of the highlights of the country.
