Liverpool Expo Pavilion Unveiled

2009. 4 September

(nwda.co.uk) The organisers of Liverpool’s presence at the World Expo 2010 have unveiled the Pavilion which will showcase the city during the six-month event in Shanghai.

The Pavilion will shine a spotlight on the city’s assets and strengths for millions of visitors attending one of the world’s biggest events.

Liverpool is the only UK city outside of London to have a dedicated presence at the World Expo. Its participation is being led by Liverpool Vision in partnership with Liverpool City Council, the Liverpool-Shanghai Partnership and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).

The World Expo runs between May 1 and October 31 and will attract around 70 million visitors. It is regarded as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to consolidate existing and forge new relationships in the world’s emerging markets and is predicted to deliver up to £50m in benefits to Liverpool and the North West over the next decade.

There will be four distinct areas to the Liverpool Pavilion:

1. Entrance
Visitors will enter through a queuing system where they will experience the sound and imagery of a number of the city’s defining characteristics, including sport and music. They will be given electronic swipe cards to register their personal details with this data available to sponsors and partners for marketing and business development purposes.

2. Auditorium
Visitors will enter an auditorium through the door of a cruise liner to enjoy their virtual cruise from Shanghai to Liverpool and the North West. This is a 10-minute 3D film which will highlight the region’s spectacular culture, business know-how, achievements and natural and built environments. When the film is finished, visitors will exit the auditorium and pass into the exhibition and event area.

3. Exhibition and event area
This area of the Pavilion includes a number of elements, including:
• Three experience pods: Sport, Gateway to the North West and Music
• An Information pod
• Liverpool 360: two multimedia walls which will display a range of multimedia material, information and imagery

Using the latest technology, the Sport pod will enable visitors to take virtual penalties against a Merseyside goalkeeper. Negotiations are taking place with both Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs to finalise their involvement in the project as a whole and this element in particular.
Visitors to the Music pod will be able to play the new Beatles: Rock Band video game, which will be available on Playstation 3, Xbox and Nintendo Wii.

The Gateway pod will take visitors on a virtual journey across the entire North West region.
Liverpool 360 consists of two arced multimedia walls which will be offer interactive content to visitors, including short, spectacular films – called 10-Second Epics – which will depict thrilling elements of Liverpool culture.

The content of these walls will be themed according to the month of the Expo and will be manoeuvrable in order to create additional event space within the Pavilion.
4. VIP area.

This area, over two floors, will be for the use of corporate sponsors and city representatives to entertain VIP guests and conduct business meetings.

Design and creative agency Uniform, based in Fleet Street in Liverpool, leads the consortium, which includes international exhibition and event specialists SYMA and architect BDP, to design and build the Pavilion.

The consortium won the contract following a rigorous competitive tendering process which involved businesses from across the world.

The Liverpool team gets access to the Pavilion site, which is in the Expo’s Urban Best Practice Area, to begin work in November.

The Pavilion is 25 metres long by 18.5 metres wide – about the size of a five-a-side football pitch.

Liverpool Council leader Warren Bradley said: “The designs and concepts behind the Pavilion are a true reflection of the city, drawing on its maritime, musical and sporting heritage, as well as its wider cultural offer.

“The Pavilion also reflects and illustrates the amazing regeneration which has taken place here in Liverpool, where we have married old and new whilst winning official World Heritage Site status at the same time.”

Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) chief executive Steven Broomhead added:
“The Shanghai Expo offers significant long-term opportunities for trade, investment and tourism for the whole of England’s Northwest, and it is vital that we present the region’s assets and opportunities in an imaginative way to capitalise on this once in a lifetime opportunity.

“The NWDA is very please to be supporting the region’s presence in Shanghai and we will continue to work closely with our partners to build on the enormous economic benefits the region stands to gain.”

Liverpool Vision’s director of investment and enterprise, Mike Taylor, said: “The Liverpool Pavilion is imaginative, compelling and exciting – much like the city itself. It offers flexible functionality and employs the very best in innovative technology to tell the story of Liverpool.

“Having the design in place will help our partners and potential sponsors envisage how we will position the city during the Expo and we hope these images will encourage more sponsors to take part.”

The lead sponsor of the Liverpool Pavilion is Peel Holdings, which has interests in ports, airports, renewable energy, media and property development across the North West.

A number of themes will be addressed by Liverpool’s Pavilion during the Expo. They are:
• Urban regeneration, energy, sustainability and the environment
• Advanced technology and science
• Culture, health and sport
• The Knowledge Sector
• Professional services
• Liverpool: the gateway to the North West (ports, airports and property development)
