National Day to light up city

Big lighting displays and 6.5 million pots of flowers will decorate the city for the upcoming National Day holiday from October 1.
New garden beds will be planted along main streets and in the downtown area for the National Day holiday, which will act as a rehearsal for the 2010 World Expo in the city, said officials from Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau yesterday.
The Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall, both sides of Huangpu River, Suzhou Creek and the western part of Yan'an Elevated Road will have major lighting displays, while there will be 100 smaller lighting displays in the districts, said the bureau.
Most lights, especially the new ones, will adopt energy-saving technology and glare reduction to reduce disturbance for nearby residents, officials said.
Construction of the lighting displays will be completed halfway through the month. The bureau will announce the lights operating hours after approval from the city government.
The bureau said this year's major lighting displays will cover more of the city than in previous years. The lighting along the pedestrian mall will extend to the Bund, and the banks of the Huangpu River will be lit up for 7 to 8 kilometers, as opposed to 2 kilometers in the past.
Less is more
The lighting along Suzhou Creek is new this year, combining lights in the landscaped areas, nearby buildings and some moving lights.
"All light facilities were in line with a local plan for urban scenic lighting design," said Yu Fujiang, deputy chief engineer of the bureau.
"It is a misunderstanding that more lights and brighter lights means more beautiful."
National flags and banners carrying slogans will be hung along all three local elevated roads and in People's Square for the National Day celebration.
Garden beds and sculptures will be revamped in main shopping areas, transport hubs and attractions, such as Xujiahui, Shanghai Railway Station and the Jing'an Temple, officials said.
Many events will be held in local parks. The Shanghai Botanical Garden will hold an autumn flower show. A carnival will be held at the Gongqing Forest Park, officials said.
