The Aussies are recruiting

2009. 18 September

(shanghai.urbanatomy.com) We all know that the largest Expo the world has ever seen is right around the corner, that we are striving for a ‘Better city, Better life’ and that from May next year, Shanghai’s population will quadruple. We are all even on first name terms with Haibao. What you may not be aware of is the unprecedented scale of Australia’s participation in the Shnghai Expo next year.

From the 1st May – 31st October, Australia’s visually striking national pavilion will showcase examples of Australian innovation, creativity and achievements to over 38,000 people a day over the 184 days of the expo. With this many people expected, it’s no wonder the Aussie’s are on a massive recruitment drive at the moment, searching for over 180 staff to man the pavilion. From sommeliers, chefs and venue managers, to sales assistants and retail managers; from finance managers and event coordinators through to pavilion guides, there are jobs for anyone and everyone who can speak both English and Mandarin, and ‘has a passion for Aussie’s’!

For those perhaps lacking the language or skill set to apply for the above jobs, there are also six spots for six lucky applicants to don a bird costume and prance around as a mascot.

The Aussie pavilion will be located at the heart of the 5.28 square kilometer expo site, on the banks of the Huangpu River in downtown Shanghai. For those interested in working during the expo, the Aussie Pavilion will be speaking at The Expat Show this weekend (18-20 Sept), and hosting a booth there too. People will be there to chat about the recruitment drive and the training program for successful applicants (you get flown to the Land of Oz for training!) Here’s hoping one of the mascots will be there – we need to see if those suits look comfy!
