The Finnish pavilion has reached its rooftop

2009. 24 September

The Finnish pavilion building at Expo 2010 in Shanghai has now reached its rooftop and the topping-out party takes place on Monday 21 September 2009. The world-famous Finnish corporations KONE and Nokia are committed as the official National Partners of Finland at Expo 2010.

The topping-out party takes place in the famous Shanghai Grand Theatre. In the party, the construction process of the Finnish pavilion will be introduced to the guests by means of a videomovie. A design competition for the pavilion was announced in May 2008. The winning proposal called Kirnu ("Giant's Kettle") designed by architect's office JKMM was published in October 2008. The ground-breaking ceremony was held in April 2009 and the construction will be finished in December 2009.

"The pavilion's steel structure has now reached its highest point in 20 meters. From now on, the construction work is proceeding apace until the end of the year. As soon as the construction of the pavilion itself is completed we will start with building the exhibition" tells Jouni Lehtonen, the Construction Manager of Finland at Expo 2010.

Sustainable high tech solutions

"Giant's Kettle reflects both the latest Finnish cutting-edge technology and the ability for new innovations of the most traditional Finnish industry that is forest industry. The outer facade of the pavilion will be covered with a new innovative and sustainable high tech -material UPM Profi, which is a composite shingle based on recycled paper and plastic material, developed by UPM, one of the leading forest products companies in the world. The whole design and all technical solutions of the Finnish pavilion, as well, will respect sustainable construction and energy-efficient life cycle of the building", says Lehtonen.

A sole and unique element of the Finnish pavilion is the typical Finnish Sauna. One of the world leading forest and paper groups Stora Enso is providing the Sauna together with Rantasalmi, the oldest log home manufacturer in the world and Harvia, the heating solution supplier for Saunas. The consortium of the three companies will realize the sauna in accordance with the winning plan, published last week, of a design competition organised by the Finnish Habitare fair for furniture, interior decoration and design. The architects for the winning Sauna design are Anu Puustinen and Ville Hara from architect's office Avanto.

KONE and Nokia announce national partnership

KONE, an innovative leader in the elevator and escalator industry and Nokia, the world leader in manufacturing mobile devices and converging Internet and communications industries, will be the official National Partners for Finland at Expo 2010. KONE is also providing a custom-made elevator for the Finnish pavilion, which will play an integral part in the pavilion's high-tech look and feel. Combining innovative technologies and cutting-edge design, the elevator will serve both as an exhibition object and as a fully functioning elevator for the pavilion.

Nokia's role both in the Finnish pavilion and also in general is that of a catalyst for innovation; by sharing our expertise we can enable new experiences which will enrich our everyday lives. Nokia will integrate new mobile and internet technologies, design, sustainable practices and experiences into the Finnish Pavilion to inspire visitors with an exciting vision of how tomorrow’s technology will change life for the better.

Finland at Expo 2010 project has also lately been joined by Finnish companies Metso, Marimekko, Abloy, Teknikum, Keraplast and Halton.
