"Dashan"- provided an update to Chinese media

2009. 25 September

(marketwire.com) At a news conference today at the Shanghai Expo Bureau, Canada's Commissioner General, Mark H. Rowswell-known as "Dashan"-provided an update to Chinese media about Canada's plans for Expo 2010.

"The Government of Canada, with the assistance of Cirque du Soleil, is creating a stunning pavilion that will be the jewel of Expo 2010 and an excellent showcase for Canada's theme 'The Living City: inclusive, sustainable, creative,'" said Mr. Rowswell. "Construction of the pavilion is taking shape and becoming a reality. Every time I come to Shanghai, I'm amazed and thrilled at the progress I see on our pavilion."

Canada is building a brand-new pavilion on a 6000-square-metre plot. Most of the mechanical and electrical work has been completed, and SNC-Lavalin is now in the process of installing the second skin made of Canadian red cedar along with other interior and exterior finishes. Mr. Rowswell also showed the latest construction photos of the pavilion.

Visitors will enter the pavilion through an open-air public square and then circulate through the larger structure that houses the public presentation. The pavilion building is shaped like a looped ribbon or a large letter "C"-for Canada-and is divided into areas for the public, for entertaining special guests, and for administration.

Mr. Rowswell also spoke about Canada's hosting program, in which young Canadians-able to speak Mandarin and French or English-will welcome guests to the Canada Pavilion. He also made reference to Canada's Cultural Program, which will showcase artists who will perform in various disciplines. Those artists will be selected from among the 1000 or so applications from across Canada. An announcement of the selected artists should be made in late fall 2009.

Mark Rowswell was appointed Canada's Commissioner General for Expo 2010 in May 2009. The Commissioner General is the champion and spokesperson for Canada's participation at the Expo and participates in media and protocol activities. Mr. Rowswell, known as "Dashan," is a well-known personality in China. He is a Member of the Order of Canada and speaks Mandarin fluently.
