2009. 17 October
by by Yang Jian
(shanghaidaily.com) Macau yesterday launched a global online vote to select the 10 most popular characters in the martial art works of Hong Kong writer Louis Cha, better known by his pen name Jin Yong. The characters will feature in a multimedia display at the Macau Pavilion during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
Cha's fiction is popular in Chinese-speaking areas throughout the world. His 15 works written between 1955 and 1972 earned him a reputation as one of the greatest martial arts writers.
He is also the best-selling living Chinese author with over 100 million copies of his works sold worldwide. His books have been translated into Korean, English, Japanese, French, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Burmese and Thai.
The Macau Expo group have picked out three to five main characters from each of his 15 novels. People can select their favorites at http://www.2010expomacao-vote.gov.mo/index.en.php. The Website has both English and Chinese versions.
The deadline is November 15.
Voters can take part in a lucky draw for Expo tickets and autographed copies of Cha's works.
The special administrative region is building a replica of Macau's 92-year-old Tak Seng On Pawnshop at the pavilion.
The pawnshop closed in 1993 but was made into a popular museum by the Macau government in 2001.
A library of Cha's works was on the second floor of the pawnshop and it became a popular place for Cha's fans to meet. The Macau Expo group is planning a similar library at its pavilion, Ieong Pou Yee, leader of Macau's Expo team, said.
Cha has said he wants to visit the pavilion to meet his fans next year, Ieong added.
The pawnshop, with a floor area of 1,950 square meters, will show visitors how it operated nearly a century ago.
