Expo 2010 mascot arrives in Liverpool

2009. 19 October

(liverpoolecho.co.uk) The latest character to appear on Liverpool's streets arrived today - all the way from Shanghai.

The World Expo 2010 mascot Haibao, which means "treasure of the sea", will stand in six places across the city for a month.

It is promoting Liverpool’s presence at the Expo, which is being held in its Chinese sister city next year.

The statues were put in place ahead of a visit from senior government officials from Shanghai this weekend.

The delegation will receive an update on Liverpool’s plans for the Expo, while also attending civic events to mark the 10th anniversary of the twinning of the two cities.

It is this relationship - and the significant emphasis it has been given in the last three years - which was critical to Liverpool being invited to take part in next year’s event.

Liverpool’s presence is predicted to deliver up to £50m over the next 10 years through rises in exports and additional inward investment, as well as increases in the number of Chinese tourists and students.

The fibreglass models of Haibao, which are 6ft and 125kg, can be seen in the Echo Arena and BT Convention Centre, Liverpool Town Hall, Metquarter, Lime Street railway station, the Capital building in Old Hall Street, and John Lennon Airport.

Robin Tudor, head of PR for Peel Airports, said: "With more than 400,000 passengers travelling through JLA over the next month, the arrival of Haibao is an excellent opportunity to promote Liverpool’s forthcoming presence at the World Expo, not just to passengers from the North West, but also to the many international visitors passing through the airport.

"Peel is the lead sponsor for Liverpool and we see Haibao’s visit to the airport as a way to help raise awareness of the unique opportunities surrounding the Expo."

The six-month event, which starts on May 1, will attract an estimated 70m people, with Liverpool’s organisers looking to bring 1m people through its pavilion - about 6,000 a day.

The city will exhibit in the Urban Best Practice Pavilion, promoting how Liverpool as a modern, leading city has developed and prospered while conserving its rich history as a World Heritage site.

The key themes of Liverpool’s presence, which will be showcased for a month each, will be urban regeneration, technology and science, culture, health and sport, the knowledge sector and professional services.
