Romania’s President to attend Expo 2010

2009. 20 October

(financiarul.ro) Romania will attend Expo 2010 in Shanghai at the level of heads of state, President Traian Basescu told a news conference he gave on Monday, at the Cotroceni Palace, together with Vice-President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping.

“I have assured the Vice-President of the People’s Republic of China that Romania would attend Expo 2010 in Shanghai at the level of heads of states on Romania’s Day,” said Traian Basescu.
He added that the exchange of opinions between the two official delegations occasioned the finding that, by some agreements signed on Tuesday at the Government, they would meet the targets established during the talks that were held in 2006 and 2008, in Beijing, with China’s President Hu Jintao.

“Starting from the reality that in China’s territory there are major investments made by the biggest companies the world over, Romania will maintain what it has maintained so far too, in the European Union, namely that in China there is a functioning market economy …

In Romania there are currently 9,595 Chinese companies and Romanian-Chinese joint ventures, which already made investments amounting to over 330 million euros in the Romanian economy and the prospect is that the Chinese companies should go on investing at a rapid pace in the Romanian economy,” said Traian Basescu.

The President also mentioned the fact that the talks focused on the bilateral relation at a political and economic level, but also referred to the Romanian-Chinese cooperation in international organizations.

“We have said again during our talks that Romania considered the problem of Tibet and of the Xinjiang province as being a domestic political question of China. And we have also confirmed the fact that we stood our ground in point of Taiwan, Romania recognizing one single China,” added Traian Basescu.

He thanked the Vice-President of the People’s Republic of China for the visit he was paying to Bucharest, a visit first occasioned by the 60th anniversary of Romanian-Chinese diplomatic relations.
On Monday evening the Romanian Head of State will give an official dinner in honour of the Vice-President of the People’s Republic of China. On Monday too Xi Jinping will meet President of the Senate Mircea Geoana and Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Roberta Anastase.

The financial resources allocated to the preparation and participation of Romania in Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China, amount to 20 million lei (10 million for 2009 and 10 million for 2010) and were approved through the law on the state budget for 2009.
In the exhibition space they will present, as main concepts, the means of developing the urban civilization but also ecosystems specific to Romania.

Visitors will be able to learn things about present-day Romania from a multimedia general presentation, which will refer to various fields: traditions, art, architecture, tourism, economy, foreign investments, research and innovation.
After 1989 Romania took part in all the world and international exhibitions organized under the aegis of the International Exhibitions Bureau.
